Downloading the Recitations from a Computer
There is no official way to download the recitations from a computer. It can, however, be done with some time investment. It needs:
1. downloading the files of the reciter from versebyversequran.com (the Ayat MP3 Recitations section)
2. unpacking the zip file, then placing the files of each surah in a folder with the surah’s three-digit number (use a batch folder creator to create the folders rapidly)
3. renaming the files such that you remove the three-digit number of the surah from all the files (using software like Advanced File Renamer)
4. placing all the folders in a single folder named with the three-digit number of the reciter in the app (e.g. 002 for ‘Ali al-Huthaifi)
5. transferring this final folder to your device in the directory [القرآن الكريم]//Documents/Private Documents/Reciters (in the User Applications section using iFunbox)

Arabic Almanac – Arabic-English Dictionaries with Searching (Lane’s, Hans Wehr, Hava)
Description and Features
1. This web application, prepared by ejtaal.net website, provides fast and easy access to the three most popular Arabic-English dictionaries (Lane’s Lexicon, Hans Wehr, and Hava) which are arranged by word roots.
2. The web service allows you to search for word roots, and it will immediately take you to the relevant page (or very close to it) in each of the three dictionaries.
3. You can even search using English (Roman) letters and it will automatically change them into their corresponding Arabic letters. So typing in (ams) will search for (أمس). This is useful if you can’t type Arabic letters for some reason.
4. You can use keyboard shortcuts to explore the website; this makes using the service even better.
5. An excellent feature in it is the ability to download the entire website in a zipped format, so that you can use it on any possible system out there that supports HTML pages and JavaScript(including iOS devices).
Supported OSs
Basically any system or browser that supports HTML pages and JavaScript. This includes (but is probably not limited to) Firefox (desktop), Internet Explorer 7/8/9, Opera (Desktop and Mobile), Google Chrome, Android devices (mostly), iOS devices (works very nicely on the iPad using GoodReader), and most smartphones and tablets. Try it yourself to see if it works. All you need is a folder/web browser that supports HTML and JavaScript.

Removing Ads in Firefox for the Caring Muslim
Since I use MediaFire for some of the download links, and MediaFire often displays Haraam advertisements that annoy the Muslim who cares for his religion, I thought I share the following method on how to (almost) completely remove advertisements (not just from MediaFire but all other kinds of websites) for the users of Firefox. Inshaa’Allaah methods for blocking ads in other browsers will be added in the future. To visualize the difference, take a look at the following MediaFire download page, before and after removing the ads:
–
STEP 1
If you are not a Firefox user, and you don’t give much care as to what type of browser you use, I suggest you download Firefox browser from the following link:
–
STEP 2
1) While surfing in Firefox, click the following link:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865/
2) Click the button “Add to Firefox“. A yellow bar should appear at the top of the page requiring your permission to download the addon. Click the “Allow” button at the right side of the bar.
3) After clicking the “Allow” button, a dialog box should appear with an “Install Now” and a “Cancel” button. Click the “Install Now” button to begin installation.
4) Wait until the addon is downloaded and installed.
5) After installing is finished, a yellow bar should appear with a “Restart Firefox” button. Click that button to restart Firefox.
6) After restarting Firefox, visit the following page to install another addon named “Adblock Plus: Element Hiding Helper” which is meant for fighting text ads. Follow the same steps as above to download and install it:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4364/
–
STEP 3
After installing the second addon, while using Firefox browser, visit the following page:
http://adblockplus.org/en/subscriptions
You should see a page that reads “Known Adblock Plus subscriptions” with a table of data beneath it. These are lists of websites that you can tell Adblock to block them and eradicate them during your browsing experience. You can select many lists. However, if you mainly visit English websites, choose only the English lists, and likewise for other languages.
1) In order to subscribe to a list, click on the links next to the “Subscribe:” title on the right column of the table in the row of each item.
2) Make sure to scroll down the page and select many of the “Fanboy’s List” items (not just those shown below in the image but also others further down the list).
3) After you click on a “Subscribe:” item, a dialog box should come up. Make sure the checkbox “Update filters automatically” is checked and click the “Add subscription” button.
After adding a good number of lists, inshaa’Allaah you will be protected from all kinds of ads recognized by the addon.
Maktabah Shamilah for Handhelds – المكتبة الشاملة للجوال
QReader is a simple text reader. It doesn’t support images but it has an excellent set of features to offer. The most important features (for me) are the great support of languages (including Arabic, and not reversed), the ability to search, autoscroll (also found in Mobipocket) and different background and foreground color options as well as some other features.
The main purpose of the post is Arabic books in general, and books of the Shaamila in particular so we will be focusing on QReader. In order to be able to read the Arabic text properly, the language setting that actually worked to show the text properly (as in the two images above) is like this:
That is to say, go to Settings -> Language. And choose these properties: Region -> Middle Eastern,Charset -> Arabic, Codepage -> Mac, and Text Direction -> Right-to-Left.
You yourself can export any books from the Shaamila yourself by using the export function. Alternatively you can directly download the books of any category prepared into text file format ready to use on the phone.
In order to download QReader (currently for Symbian only) visit the following link:
And you can download the books of any of the categories of the Shaamila from the following website:
موسوعة أهل الحديث والأثر – Compendium of Scholars of Hadeeth and Athar
This is huge library of lectures and Fataawaa from the major Islaamic ‘Ulamaa’ of our time. These are the features:
1) It contains 1327 audio tapes of Shaykh bin Baaz, 984 tapes of Shaykh al Albaanee, 4803 (yes, four thousand eight hundred and three) tapes of Shaykh ‘Uthaymeen, 421 tapes of Shaykh Fawzaan, 991 tapes of Shaykh ‘Abdul Muhsin al ‘Abbaad, 268 tapes of Shaykh Saalih Aal ash Shaykh, 407 tapes of Shaykh Mashhoor Aaal Salmaan, Rahimahum Allaah. That adds up to about 9201 tapes in total!
2) A Windows application to use these audio files with more ease. This is why the software is useful: Some of the audio files, like the Silsilatul Hudaa wan Noor of Shaykh al Albaanee, Rahimahu Allaah, consist of questions and answers. The software contains the names of all the Mashaayyikh mentioned above in the form of a tree structure and when you expand any of the names the titles of the different series of lectures of that Shaykh are displayed. Clicking on of those series displays, in another list, the titles of the individual files of that series. So, for example, I expand the item of the name of Shaykh al Albaanee, Rahimahu Allaah, and then click on the series Silsilatul Hudaa wan Noor. Then I choose the lecture number 20. Clicking on that lecture, will display, in another list, all the questions which are asked in that lecture. So, I can easily choose a question and it will automatically play the tape from the position of that question. To illustrate, this is how it looks:
3) The ability to search, using the software, for words in any or all of the Mashaaykh’s tapes as provided in the index. This can, to a certain degree, also come in handy.
Now you don’t “have” to install the software to listen to the audio files. You may, for example, want to put the files on your mobile phone or audio player to listen to them when you are in the bus, in your car, or any other time when you are away from the computer and this is just as possible. The software just makes it sort of easier to index the audio files and navigate through them.
Note: When I first tried to install the software on Windows Vista, I kept getting an error message of a component registration failure which made me think that it wasn’t supported on Vista. However, today installed RealPlayer and then reinstalled the software and al Hamdu li Allaah it worked. So you may want to download RealPlayer if you don’t already have it on your system.
You can download the software from this link:
And then you start downloading the audio files of your choice. Again, you don’t “have” to download all 9201 tapes for the program to work. Even if you have a single tape downloaded, the software will play it. Now it is also time to mention how to tell the software where the files are. There is a very nice feature in the application where you just select any directory on your hard drive and you tell the application to automatically create all the folders of the names of the Mashaayyikh and subfolders for the titles of the series. All that is left for you is to place the downloaded audio files in their right folders. You can do this automatic folder creation by going to عمليات –> مسار البرنامج وإنشاء المجلدات where you choose a drive letter and then choose the folder in which you want the software to automatically create the folders for you.
The audio files are all in Real Media format, that is why you need RealPlayer installed on your system. If, however, you are not interested in installing the software but just the audio tapes themselves, and you don’t want to install RealPlayer, you can easily convert the files to any other format, like mp3, using any media conversion software like the open source Media Coder.
You can either download the audio files individually or download groups of them packed in one zip file. To download the individual files, the following link will show you the names of the Mashaayyikh from where you can get to the desired tapes:
And the following page contains the same names of the Mashaayyikh only that this one contains groups of lectures packed in zip files:
